You've probably heard me mention the seemingly endless punch list I have of things my boat needs done, ASAP if not sooner.
I have to say, I really have problems with the idea of things continuing to fall apart.
There's a famous story about Zen master Sen no Rikyu, who told his son Shoan to clean the garden path.
Rikyu said this was wrong, whereupon he shook a tree, scattering autumn leaves all over the path.
The lesson seems to be not to tolerate ordinary untidiness exactly, but that sterile perfection destroys natural beauty.
It's reasonable to try to learn to accept the limitations of your situation, but you can't afford to let things fall apart either, which makes the lesson more frustrating and inscrutable than a Zen koan.
So if you've managed to solve this conundrum, I sure hope you'll enlighten me.
