Can eating more eggs and peanuts during pregnancy and breastfeeding reduce a baby’s risk of developing food allergy?
In this episode of *Hope & Histamine: The Paediatric Allergy Podcast*, we examine **the PrEggNut trial,** a large randomised study involving more than 2,100 pregnant women whose babies had a strong family history of allergic disease. Researchers compared a maternal diet rich in eggs and peanuts with a standard-intake diet from pregnancy until four months after birth.
Despite greater maternal exposure, the high-intake diet did not significantly reduce egg or peanut allergy in infants at one year of age. We explore the study’s findings, its strengths and limitations, and what the results mean for maternal diet, breastfeeding and current approaches to preventing food allergy in children.
A concise, evidence-based discussion for parents, paediatricians, allergy professionals and anyone interested in pregnancy nutrition and infant allergy prevention.
