Today, I review Five Broken Blades, by Mai Corland! Goodreads: Ellie Mano Email: hookofabookpodcast@gmail.com TikTok/Instagram: @hookofabook
It's been a really long time since I've been able to sink into a fantasy series this easily I've actually read less fantasy this year because I think I just read so much the past few years that I found it harder and harder to enjoy, but I felt like Five Broken Blades really invoked the same feelings in me that I had when I was reading my favorite fantasy books from when I was a little bit younger, like Six of Crows, which is still my favorite of all time.
I was so invested in the characters and their relationships to each other and how they were going to conquer this intense plot.
Each of these five people is very different and has very different motives for being there.
It wouldn't be exactly wrong to say the king, King Jun, kind of had this coming for him.
He's a very cruel ruler, and he often favors the rich instead of the common citizens.
Each one of these five people that comes together to kill King Jun has had their own taste of King Jun.
Each member of the group has a very unique journey on their quest, and nobody really can trust each other.
On their journey to kill King Jun, they will have to face a lot of threats that aren't exactly involved with their quest.
After fighting these battles and spending so much time together, these characters begin to grow very close.
And when it comes time to finally put their dangerous plan into place, they might realize that absolutely nothing has been as it seemed.
This is a dangerous world for everybody, from kings to assassins, and there might have been secrets in front of them this entire time.
I know I gave a little bit of a briefer summary than I usually do, but I didn't want to give away anything about this book because trust me, you will never be able to see any of these twists and turns coming.
I really didn't read much about Five Broken Blades before starting to read it, and I thought that was a very good decision because when I say I was shocked at all moments, I mean it.
This book really draws a lot on Korean mythology, and I thought that was really interesting because I love Asian-inspired fantasy stories.
The book that this reminded me most of was Six of Crows, which I feel like is a very high comparison, because as I've said, that's genuinely one of my favorite books of all time.
