The sun rises in 536 CE, but it looks wrong, cold, bluish, dim enough to stare at. That one eerie detail opens the door to a chain reaction that hits everything a money system depends on: harvests, shipping, taxes, loans, labor, and trust. I use that “year without a sun” to frame a bigger question that still matters today: what happens to money when the empire that guards it disappears, and what does it actually take to rebuild?
We walk through the long economic unwind after 476, when Rome stops being a state and becomes a memory, and we get specific about the plumbing that made Roman trade possible in the first place: grain fleets, safe sea lanes, enforceable contracts, standardized coinage, and reliable administration. Then we follow the West as coins grow scarce, payments shift to weight, and yet accounting units refuse to die. The “barter after Rome” story turns out to be too simple, because people keep pricing debts, fines, and obligations in familiar monetary terms even when they rarely touch a coin.
From Byzantium’s stable solidus and Justinian’s expensive dream of reconquest to the Nika Riot, bankers behind the throne, and a law code that still shapes how we think about interest, this is financial history with teeth. Then the Plague of Justinian hits the supply chain, rewrites labor markets, and triggers price controls and harsh tax math that will sound painfully familiar after COVID-era debates. We also trace the rise of trade in Arabia, the logic of protecting caravans instead of raiding them, Islamic coin reform with the dinar and dirham, and the slow return of silver coinage in the Carolingian world.
