Walk with me through the Pikrovrisi tis Merikas trail — a place where Troodos reveals its ancient ocean past. From pillow lavas in the Maroullena gorge to the Petravlako aqueduct and the Kokkinoritsos…
Konstantia AchilleosHostThe name Merigas comes from a plant, the tamarix scrap that grows near the riverbanks.
And it's also the name of a medieval neighborhood that once existed near the end of the trail.
The trail starts at the spring called Picrobrisi, which means bitter spring.
The water has this slightly mineral taste because of the volcanic rocks that are weathered with the river water.
Right next to the spring is the old Venetia Bridge, which is a part of a network of Venetian bridges across Cyprus.
You step on wooden boardwalks and you feel this cooler air and darker landscape.
The gorge walls are made of pillow lavas, which are around the volcanic formation created when lava erupted underwater millions of years ago.
It's one of the clearest places of Cyprus to understand that Troodos was once oceanic crust.
This quartz is also one of the last habitats of Cyprus water snake, which is called Natrix natrix cypriana.
The Marulina River provides this cool flowing water that the snake needs.
You start seeing Ialoclastidae, volcanic glass fragments formed when lava shatters instantly upon meeting seawater.
This part of the trail sits close to the boundary between volcanic sequence and the basa group, as it's called, of the Trotters of Field Light.
