Episode 32: The Future Flip

I can't believe we're talking about this, but all of a sudden, prenuptial agreements have entered the chat, and it's all because the Lululemon billionaire Chip Wilson and his wife are divorcing after 20-plus years without a prenup.

Let me catch you up.

Chip is 21.

His wife, Summer Wilson is 52.

Chip started Lululemon back in 1998 and Summer Wilson is credited as being the company's founding lead designer.

They married way back in 2002.

So four years after the company was started and both have long since retired more than 10 years ago from the company.

But today, Mr. Wilson owns 8.6% of the company.

That's worth about a billion bucks.

And his former bride, Summer Wilson, owns around 1%, which is worth around $100 million.

This is yet another high-profile example of a marriage going south.

Of course, back in 2019, we saw Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Mackenzie Scott finalize their divorce.

And McKinsey Scott received roughly 4% of Amazon.

At the time, that was worth around $36 billion, according to BBC News.

And a couple of years later in 2021, the Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, they divorced after 27 years.

And we're talking billions of dollars in stock that was transferred to Melinda.

So there's a lot of chatter right now.

And you and I have never actually spoken about this.

I wanted to see what you thought of the Lululemon split, what impact it could, if any, have on the business.

And what do you think about prenuptials agreements, or as we would call them, prenups? Prenups.

Are you for them, John? Are you against them? Do they have a place? Where are you on this?

I didn't sign one.

You know, one of the problems you have with a prenup like this is you form a Lululemon and you don't have a lot of money then.

And so there's not really a reason to protect a lot of stuff.
