The Salish Sea Guillemot Network is a collection of volunteers and scientists from non-profits, agencies, and more to monitor and learn more about Pigeon Guillemots…
Maria Mudd RuthGuestSo we had a friend of our podcast, Ryan, reach out to us.
And Ryan wanted to spread a message of trying to increase inclusivity and breaking down barriers for others in birding.
And that's something that we can really... you know, relate to, because one of the reasons we started our podcast was because there was so much, um, we found that there was a lot of like conversation about birding in certain places, but then there wasn't really a whole lot of information about how to bird those places.
It felt like there was insider information and outsider information.
And we wanted there to be less of that split.
Everyone should know it all.
I don't think it was specifically to like gatekeep or anything.
No, I don't
think it was intentionally.
It was
just a lot of word of mouth conversation about, like you said, about birding in different places.
Like for example, Zach's in Bog is a place that I just really wanted to explore and I had like no background or understanding of how to do that.
And for a long time, I mean, there were some blog articles, but a lot of it was word of mouth.
And so that was one of the reasons we started this is that we wanted to share with you all like how to bird in some different places or at least how we birded in those places.
Whether we were successful at doing it or not.
Yeah, so just to get back to what Ryan was talking about, about inclusivity and breaking down barriers and trying to include more people into the birding community.
Birding is going to be more successful if we have more people doing it because it will, in theory, protect birds that we all want to see.
Yeah.
Because we'll force other people to love and care about them and their well-being.
And so please do what you can as much as possible to help share birds and birding
with others.
So thank you, Ryan, for sending that message.
Yeah.
And hopefully that resonates with you all.
