A magpie warbled above, and Jack could see small twitches of movement either side of him as seventeen gun barrels faced forward to the forest of eucalyptus.
Jack himself was poised with the flat rifle butt pressing into his right shoulder at the bone, stance relaxed.
The shooting sling wrapped around his left upper arm, the weight of the weapon firm in his grip.
Ready, came Kempster's hushed voice as he stood behind the line of his student rifleman.
Fire, Kempster roared, and the simultaneous blasts of all the boys' rifles roared back.
