I think one of the reasons comparison hits so hard is because we're comparing ourselves to incomplete information.
We're not seeing the books that flopped, the ones they thought were going to be a big deal and weren't.
And when we're only consuming these polished personas, it's really easy to believe that everybody else has it figured out.
It's really easy to believe that, like, you're the only one struggling, and I guarantee you, you're not.
And social media is particularly good at making us forget that because people generally don't post the months where nothing happened, and they don't post the opportunities they didn't get, and they don't post the ideas that failed.
They post things that they're proud of because we're all putting ourselves out there to be judged on social media.
You are going to be judged, and we want to put our best face forward and make sure that that judgment is a positive one, right? So everybody is doing this.
And the next time you catch yourself spiraling, ask yourself, "Am I comparing my rough draft to somebody else's finished book?" Because that's not a fair comparison.
