What exactly is Mother-Daughter Weekend at Alleghany, and why is it such a special introduction to camp? In this episode, Elizabeth sits down with Mother-Daughter Weekend Co-Heads Ace and Mae…

Elizabeth ShreckhiseHostAce DandridgeGuestSo let's kinda just talk about, like, the very beginnings of Mother Daughter Weekend.
So, um, you know, I had the idea.
It wasn't really my own creative thing.
I know other camps that do something like this, and I thought, "I really think that we can do this.
I think we can fit this in right before mini camp.
Counselors are all there.
You know, kinda make it a, a part of staff training the way mini camp is," which we will get into during our mini camp episode.
Um, but I th- I really felt like we could do this with the right leadership and just the right planning.
Um, so I approached Ace, and I will say it's because years before that, maybe, like, four years prior to that, we had put out, um, kind of a public announcement that we were looking for a new program director.
And you had reached out to me, Ace, in that process and said, "What does it entail?" And at the time it was m- more full-time than what you could do, but it, it really stuck with me.
I was like, Ace... 'Cause I think your email even said something like, "I really felt called to reach out to you with this." Like, something about seeing that there was an opening at camp, you know, made me really wanna reach out.
And so, um, I had it in the back of my mind for, for all those years, like, if there's something that makes sense for Ace to do I want to, I want, I want it to be her.
And so you were really my first thought, my first choice.
And so I remember we met at a restaurant in Charlottesville, and I was like, "All right.
Here's this crazy idea I have." [laughs] Um, so take it from there.
Like, what did you think? What made you say yes to that? [laughs] Well, I, I, I wouldn't have dreamed of saying no.
I mean, it was a great, it was, it was a great idea.
It's, um...
And, you know, I love camp, and I, you know, it's, it's really fulfilling to sort of be a part of something that is so important and so lasting and, and in supportance with so many people.
So yeah, I mean, that was a no-brainer.
Um, then it was like, okay, how do we execute? And then Mae, you know, stepped in and she was part of the planning, but it was a pretty broad scope.
I mean, it was kind of like, you know, we're gonna introduce it to the mothers and daughters, and we're gonna show them what it's like to be at camp, and there are gonna be activities, and we'll throw in a campfire and a scavenger hunt or something like that.
And, um-

You can plan it until you turn blue, but you don't know what it's actually gonna be like-
Yeah
