A seam failure. A tank about to explode. One week to fix it before everything was lost. Sergio Sanchez (@themolarcoral) built a 110-gallon mixed reef into the wall of his family room — his first saltwater tank ever. He walks through the emergency swap that nearly ended his reef, why he skipped small and went straight to 110 gallons, and what it's really like to manage hammers, torches, gonis, and acros all in the same tank. He also gets into running elevated phosphates with corals that keep growing anyway, a UV sterilizer hack that killed his ich problem for good, and the honest learning curve of jumping into saltwater from freshwater with no experience and no safety net. Sergio runs a full Red Sea system on a Marineland 110 — his first reef and, after an emergency tank swap, technically his second. Sergio SanchezGuest

1:07

That was crazy.

Sergio SanchezGuest

1:08

You know, it was insane.

Sergio SanchezGuest

1:09

Lucky moment, I guess.

Sergio SanchezGuest

1:11

I was watching TV, you know, YouTube channels and I was watching the Polar Reef and the whole disaster that happened to him.

Sergio SanchezGuest

1:17

You know, and you're like thinking, wow, that's never going to happen to me.

Sergio SanchezGuest

1:21

I'm so lucky it never happens to me.

Sergio SanchezGuest

1:22

Right.

Sergio SanchezGuest

1:23

And I'm...

Sergio SanchezGuest

1:24

You know, one day I'm cleaning off the tank and later I'll show you the frame around the tank gets out.

Sergio SanchezGuest

1:29

So I remove it to start cleaning and I'm doing like, you know, scraping and then it's like, wait, there's something wrong here.

Sergio SanchezGuest

1:35

And I see like a little glare where the seam goes and I start freaking out.

Sergio SanchezGuest

1:40

I made a video and I sent it to my local fish store and they are, dude, you have to change this tank yesterday.

Sergio SanchezGuest

1:49

because this is about to explode.

Sergio SanchezGuest

1:51

So I'm start panicking, of course, you know, it never happened to me in my life.

Sergio SanchezGuest

1:54

I never expect this to happen.

Sergio SanchezGuest

1:56

Thankfully, you know, they were able to get the tank within a week.

Sergio SanchezGuest

1:59

So the only thing I did, they told me, you know, don't even get closer to the tank that I'm feeding.

Sergio SanchezGuest

2:03

Stay away from it.

Sergio SanchezGuest

2:04

Don't let your kids run around or jump around it.

Sergio SanchezGuest

2:07

Just stay away from it.

Sergio SanchezGuest

2:08

So there's less movement or pressure.

Sergio SanchezGuest

2:10

And I was like every day praying that this thing will not explode in my family room, you know.
