What if you aren’t broken and don’t need to be “fixed”? In Fishing Without Bait Episode 533, host Jim Ellermeyer welcomes Melissa Carey for Part 1 of a four-part conversation about mindfulness…
Jim EllermeyerHostIt is kind of fun to sit at this age of myself and go, oh my goodness, all those things, every one of those things that looked like an obstacle, that blocked my path, that made me question what I was doing, they got me here.

Well, we often learn, we do, we learn more from failure than by success, by obstacles that we overcome.

It's like we talk about often if a baseball team won every day, would anybody soon come to see them or would the players lose interest also? Right.
When things are going well in life, we don't often take a moment to appreciate how well things in life are going.
But the minute something gets in our way, the minute something blocks us, that comes up, that challenges us, that takes us for a loop, right, that brings us into some kind of emotional distress, all of a sudden our attention and awareness is there.
You can't help but be mindful because that's where your presence is, right? Everything is in your face.
And I think part of that is we've come to a belief that the opportunity the measure of life is trying to get to the point where there are no challenges or obstacles instead of seeing that the challenges and obstacles are all part of the flow, right? That acceptance.

So quite often what we do, Melissa, is I make the analogy that people are generally like a net fisherman that cast out a net, and really what the only thing that they pull back in is the negative experiences, because most memories are formed by strong emotional

I say, when you go out to your car and turn the key on and the car starts, do you ever even think about that? And they say, generally, no.

I said, well, tell me about a time when you had to go somewhere, and it was important, or just go to the grocery store, and you turned the key and the car didn't start.

But I generally tell them, if you address or be mindful of every positive things that happened in your life, the car started, I found my shoes, I found my keys, I got in the car, somebody smiled at me today.

If you would recognize and address all these positives in your life, your net would be so heavy at the end of the day, you couldn't lift it.
Like we don't have to take our whole day and reshape it around every moment in our brain finding the positive thing.
