So I have been working in the independent media sector since 1995 on the west coast of Canada, and I have just somehow glommed onto this idea that, um, independent stories and stories from all different perspectives of people really help us understand each other, have healthier communities, and ultimately support a democracy.

So somehow that got into my head and, um, my real first big job was at BC Film, which was the precursor to Creative BC, so I was actually running development programs there and, uh, mentorship programs, and ended up then doing some independent producing myself.

And what was really interesting about my position is I was licensing short-form content from around the world, and my sort of remit was 40% Canadian, 60% international, but looking for short-form stories from cultures that Canadians didn't usually get to hear from.

And that engagement is really meant to open up conversations, and empathy, and, um, sort of brainstorming on how we can collectively work on these issues that are existing within our country.
