You do not need to fill the space with frantic phone checking or elaborate journaling unless that genuinely helps you relax. A book, a map, a notebook, or just quiet observation is enough. The real etiquette here is not to act as though being alone is an apology. You are allowed to take up one chair and order one meal. That is not suspicious. That is dinner. Ordering is where confidence can quietly wobble, especially if the menu is full of unfamiliar words or the waiter is moving at a pace that suggests the kitchen has a very firm opinion about timing. Restaurant etiquette means being ready, but not rushed. Ask questions if you need to. Clarify ingredients, portion sizes, or whether the side dish is included. If you have dietary needs, state them clearly and early. Good restaurants are used to this. What helps everyone is calm precision, not a dramatic monologue about your relationship with gluten. Then there is the bill, the final little test of composure. Check it without making a scene, and if something looks wrong, ask politely. Tipping customs vary, so a quick bit of local research saves embarrassment later. And if you are dining alone in a place that feels a little formal, remember this: restaurant etiquette is not about shrinking yourself. It is about moving through the experience with enough ease that the meal stays what it should be — food, not theatre. The more you practise, the more natural it becomes, until one day you realise you’ve ordered, eaten, paid, and left without a single internal collapse.
