Fellowship Bible Church, Tacoma - Weekly Sermon
Sep 27, 2026 · 1 hr 35 min · 12 segments
We are messed up people living in a messed up world. The Bible is unflinching in this diagnosis. But the Bible is also unflinching in its promise of hope: through the Messiah, God will set this world…
That is the message of our passage today in a nutshell.
Really, you could say it's the message of the entire scroll of Haggai.
It's a construction book, right? We talked about this a couple of weeks ago.
Haggai is like the prophet Haggai.
in a hard hat.
If you remember from a few weeks ago, kind of when the story starts, the temple is just, it's a pile of rubble when the book begins because it had been destroyed by the Babylonians some 60 years earlier.
And last week they laid the foundation.
Michael took us through that, which is a great start, right? That's a wonderful thing to do, but there's still a long way to go.
So four and a half years, this construction project is going to take, which depending on your perspective, that's either a really long time.
Maybe if you're used to more other projects, you're like, no, that's super short.
I don't know.
But four and a half weeks, they've still got a long...
Four and a half years, they're a couple of months in.
They got a long way to go on this thing.
And if you read the book of Ezra, you know that in that four and a half years, they're going to face...
All sorts of opposition.
Did anyone do that homework from a few weeks ago? Remember we talked about, hey, if you really want to be, some of you, Dave did, great.
If you really wanted to be a star, Alan, the two star students, you guys should go get another maple bar right now.
You could go do that, no? No, but that really gives you the historical context, both for what has been faced, they've been facing so far, but also what they're going to face after this sermon.
So you read the book of Esther, you're going to realize, wow, yeah, they need this sermon that Haggai is going to preach right here because they're going to get issues from their neighbors.
They're going to get, you know, letters are going to be written, all sorts of things trying to stop this construction project.
But here we see they're not just going to face threats from the outside, but the inside.
Their own troubled people.
