Farmers in the South East are sounding the alarm with regards to the dry weather.

Although some rain is promised from today, recent high temperatures and low rainfall have negatively impacted crops and animals.

Dennis Drennan, President of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association, says a lot of rain is needed.
We're in a serious position, especially in the South East.
We have 90 to 100 millimetres of a deficit in the soil moisture.
So that's going to take probably two inches of rain.
And the chances of getting that amount of rain in the foreseeable future is pretty poor.
So growth rate has really collapsed.
We measure grass growth rate in kilograms of dry matter per hectare.
It should be somewhere between 50 and 60 kilograms per hectare per day at the moment.
It's under 20 at the moment.

The National Ploughing Association and FBD Insurance are once again teaming up to provide the Keeping You Safe Child Safety Wristband Initiative at this year's National Ploughing Championships.

More than 40,000 wristbands will be available free of charge at event entrances, allowing parents and guardians to add a contact number to help reunite families if children become separated during the event.

The initiative has become a familiar part of the ploughing championships, giving families extra peace of mind as they attend one of the biggest events on the farming calendar.

This year's National Ploughing Championships take place in Scraggan, Tullamore from the 15th to 17th of September.

The Department of Agriculture has launched a new Forestry4U online hub and Forestry Ambassador Initiative to help farmers and landowners explore forestry opportunities.

The resources bring together information on grants, supports and real-life experiences from those involved in forestry with the aim of making tree planting more accessible.

More than 4,000 farmers and contractors in Cork are set to receive around €3 million in support through the Fuel Income Support Scheme.

The scheme was introduced to help offset the impact of rising fuel costs with payments based on marked gas oil usage during the five-month period from March to July 2026.

The Department of Agriculture says over €20 million has already begun issuing nationally, with further payments to follow as applications are cleared.

FRS Training has launched its Free Family CPD Initiative for 2026, offering online farm safety training to 300 farming families from August until October.

Funded by the Department of Agriculture, the programme covers key areas including machinery safety, livestock handling, slurry safety and farm wellbeing, with training available for all generations of the farm family.
