Somthing BAD Is Happening to Moscow

Start with the deal.

Every Muscovite was sold.

For four years, most of Moscow watched this war on television.

The fighting was hundreds of kilometers away.

Independent Russia counts of the dead point the same direction.

The men who died came mostly from poorer regions far from here.

The restaurants stayed full.

The metro ran on time.

Salaries kept climbing.

Picture it as a trade.

The region sent the men.

Moscow kept its normal.

That was the arrangement.

Nobody signed it.

Everybody understood it.

And the city had kept building as if nothing had changed.

New parks, new tower blocks, wide new pavements under fresh trees.

In twenty-twenty-three, Moscow opened a new metro ring around the city.

Officials called it the longest in the world.

That's the message a capital sends when it wants you to believe the war is somewhere else.

Look at the timing.

A war on and the capital cutting ribbons, and the Kremlin guarded that normal like a fortress.

In the war's first winter, air defense systems appeared on Moscow rooftops.

One sat on a defense ministry building.

The message was simple.
