Surveil Is Better than Draw: How to Brew Reality Fracture

So many of these cards, David, are using this wild new mechanic called Empower Jace.

So tell us a little bit about what that means and how should we interpret it?

So this is the newest token.

As they run out of design space, they just create new tokens every set, basically, right? You create a clue, you create a blood, you create a mutagen token or whatever, a map.

So this is the latest one.

Jace is a planeswalker that has two native abilities, minus one to surveil one and minus three to draw a card.

It has no other abilities.

The token, it functions sort of like a mask.

So you can only have one Jace token in play at one time.

If you already have a Jace token, then instead of creating a new one, you just add whatever the empower Jace number is to it.

So if you have no Jace token and you empower Jace two, you create a Jace with two tokens, excuse me, two loyalty.

But if you empower Jace 2 again, you don't create another token.

You just add to loyalty to your existing Jace token.

There are a couple of other cards that create Jace tokens from legacy magic.

Luckily, they're awful.

So this will never come up in real magic.

So you can just think of it as...

It's making a food, it's making a treasure, it's making a Jace token.

So sort of depending on how much loyalty you get, a clue that doesn't cost any mana is the sort of best case to minus three Jace.

Or just basically tacking a surveil on to a bunch of effects in a very convoluted way for no reason.

So you're able to simplify it that way.

The newness of it, the audacity of putting a Planeswalker on a token.

They did a lot of tricks with the Jace token.
