In our top story, a large international study has found no evidence that the blockbuster diabetes and weight loss medication, semaglutide, increases the risk of developing wet AMD.

The research, published in the journal Ophthalmology, examined health records from more than 227,000 adults with type 2 diabetes who were prescribed semaglutide, the active ingredient found in Wegovi and Ozempic.

Researchers from the Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics Network examined data from 2017 to 2024 from 12 healthcare databases spanning electronic health records and insurance claims.

Investigators found that patients taking semaglutide were no more likely or less likely developed wet AMD than patients using several other commonly prescribed diabetes medications.

The study also found no evidence that the comparison diabetes medications altered the risk of wet AMD.

The authors cautioned that their study cannot completely rule out small effects in either direction, but said the study provides evidence against large differences in the risk of wet AMD associated with semaglutide use among patients with type 2 diabetes.
