Fallout 4 is a game that thrusts players into a very strange future. A Commonwealth littered with strange happenings and explainable events. From aliens, to ghosts to mutants, so much of what we…
Starting off, who is the Old Man, and why is he bossing around Kellogg? So, we're all very familiar with Kellogg, one of the first characters we ever encounter in Fallout 4.
He's the man who breaks into Vault 111, murders our spouse to death, and steals our son.
Much of the game's first act is dedicated to tracking this individual down and bringing him to justice.
Well, eventually we succeed in this objective, and once Kellogg is killed, it's revealed that he's in fact part cyborg.
Evidently, he was implanted with a number of devices by the Institute to prolong his life and make him even more effective in combat.
Because of this, during the quest Dangerous Minds, we're able to implant Kellogg's memories into the mind of Nick Valentine, and go inside and explore them in one of the memory dens in Goodneighbor.
we'll get to bear witness to some of Kellogg's most prominent memories, including parts of his upbringing, when he was first hired by the Institute, and we'll even experience the memory of him breaking into Vault 111 and, well, ruining our lives, essentially.
All this time, Kellogg's voice is narrating these memories, going back and recounting the experiences.
And when he's doing this, he consistently refers to a strange character from the Institute called the Old Man.
Take a listen.
But it was one of the Old Man's pet projects, so here we were.
Me and the kid.
Like a happy little family.
I never knew why we didn't just refreeze the rest of them.
But we had our orders.
Guess the old man didn't want so many loose ends.
Who is this character, and why are they ordering around Kellogg? Now, at first, it's very easy to assume that old man is referring to Sean, the director of the Institute when we escape Vault 111, who is very much an elderly fellow.
However, these memories are from literal decades ago, well before Sean was appointed at the helm of the Institute.
So, it's someone else.
A seemingly likely explanation is that maybe this is just in reference to the old director of the Institute.
Maybe Sean's predecessor was also an old man, and that's who Kellogg's speaking of.
The thing is, we know that's not true, because the last director of the Institute was definitely a woman.
This is proven by the fact that all around the Institute's headquarters, we can find holotapes left behind by that previous director, as she describes various events and decisions she made.
And her voice is obviously not that of an old man, so it definitely wasn't the last director.
So who could this fellow be? Well, and this is my personal favorite theory, many players suspect that it could be Dr.
