My curiosity led me to, like, self-determination theory and achievement theory, and all these, like, psychological things.

But what was interesting is, like, the literature, the research was sharing that, you know, endless productivity or what we call optimizing our time is a result of unresolved emotions.

There are some unresolved emotions that you're holding onto, whether it's shame, guilt, fear.

These are really powerful drivers of human behavior, and so you're trying to resolve or cope with that discomfort through the distraction of productivity.

But when I went to the bookstores for, like, personal development or self-help, they were all talking about surface level habit building, so it was all behavioral.

It was all about, like, change your behaviors, change your habits, add this, take this away, and then you will feel this sense of connection or balance.

[Instrumental music] Hi, I'm Dr. Jessica Higgins, licensed psychologist and relationship coach, and this is the Empowered Relationship Podcast, where we explore how to cultivate relational connection, security, and growth.

Today, I am joined by Izra Nazir, a speaker, author, and trained therapist, to explore how drive for achievement can quietly interfere with connection.

In this conversation, we look at how toxic productivity shows up in our relationships, shaping how we love, relate, and even experience intimacy.

We'll talk about what it takes to shift from performing and optimizing to being present and emotionally connected.

And I'll also put a free relationship guide, Shifting Criticism into Connected Communication.

So this guide helps you workshop, if you will, how to approach your significant other with more of a reveal of this concern, pain, worry, fear, or perhaps a request so that they can be in a better position to respond to what is important to you rather than getting off track on this criticism defensiveness loop that, again, typically creates more conflict and more disconnection.

Again, drjessicahiggins.com. Before we begin, I wanna invite you to join me in taking a simple moment of pause, perhaps bringing your attention inward, feeling your body, perhaps taking a deep inhale and a deep exhale.

Perhaps just noticing any sensations, any shifting as you take that deep inhale and deep exhale.
