CORNELL SUSPENDS FRAT PARTIES/HAVE FRATERNITIES AND SORORITIES OUTLIVED THEIR USEFULNESS?

Fraternities and sororities have been part of college life since the nation's founding, reportedly starting in 1776 with the founding of Phi Beta Kappa of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.

They have been a source of concern for every parent whose child may be wandering off into the big world for the first time.

They ostensibly make friendships flourish and form lifelong connections.

But the dark side has always been there, and seemingly is growing, and hazing activities that allegedly at Cornell include contests that include a competition to have sex with women they considered overweight.

A fraternity was placed on probation after that, and a year later a freshman was found dead after an alleged hazing incident.

That was 2019.

And yet in 2024, Jane Doe alleges she was drugged and made available for gang rape by members of the Chi Phi fraternity.

She has sued Cornell, which is making this progress at any pace at all.
