So most of us on the street or famously now in the pub politics think that our politicians in one part of parliament come up with bills and then it goes to the next chamber where it's debated and then finally or hopefully passed.
But there's a little bit more to it than that, isn't it? So you're talking about committee and budget estimates.
Could you just tell us what they are and how they work in relation to the everyday operating of parliament?

In Australia, we're the only one where we're called a unicameral, which means one chamber.

That all emanated from over 100 years ago and a referendum was held regarding whether Queensland should retain it or ditch it.

For that 100 years, we have had, and anyone can look up, a history that has led to some pretty dark history.

And I think it was probably when the Fitzgerald Inquiry occurred, it really pulled apart how bad and corrupt our systems had allowed.

And the role would be to call into account some of the politics that is being debated?

So the role of committees is that when a bill, whether it's a government bill or a private member's bill, is tabled, it is sent to a committee for a legislated inquiry process that includes community consultation.

It could include holding public hearings, accepting submissions, and then they will make a recommendation or recommendations with their report.

So that report, whatever the subject matter is, will say it's recommended to pass or it's recommended to not pass.

I've for many years raised the flaws in our committee system and as to why it's not doing what it is supposed to do.
Could you tell us what some of those flaws might be? Sure.
