What hugely popular artist, band, or genre does everyone else seem to love—but you just don’t get?
That’s the question Brian S. Redd brings to the DJNTV Hangout. This isn’t about hating an artist or claiming they have no talent. It’s about those performers whose appeal simply goes right past you. As the panel puts it, you can respect the person while still not understanding the appeal of their art.
The conversation quickly gets dangerous as the DJs bring up Chappell Roan, Amy Winehouse, Sammy Hagar, Sleep Token, Meat Loaf, Dead Kennedys, Dead Milkmen, The Smiths, Dave Matthews Band, Karen Carpenter, Phish and even entire genres of electronic music. Naturally, not everyone on the panel agrees!
But the discussion also raises an interesting question: Does our taste in music change as we get older? Several panelists talk about artists they didn't understand when they were younger but eventually learned to appreciate. Maybe some music simply finds us at a different point in life.
