Forteto della Luja is undoubtedly one of the winemaking gems of Piedmont and Italy. Its legendary Loazzolo Piasa Rischei - a mesmerizing wine of astonishing class and elegance - tells a fascinating…
We are in Piedmont, and wine which has been awarded to be the best represent a very important part of the Italian history when it comes to wine, and also some interesting facts associated both to the winery, the territory, and the wine.
And the best wine for May 2026 is Loazzolo Piazza Risqué 2022, which is produced by Forteto della Luia winery.
This represents a successful story about a rare wine, and I hope you all to taste it sooner or later.
This is a very important wine to which I am familiar with for a long time now because it was one of the wines that was absolutely mentioned the most when I started being into wine more than 30 years ago.
And this was one of the legendary wines already, although produced in small quantity.
And to the success and the story of this wine is also associated one of the most leading and influential figures of the Italian wine critics, and I'm talking about Luigi Veronelli, to me one of the most important figures of the Italian wine scene for what he wrote, books, rappers, and all the things, to me very important because when I started being into wine, his books were some of the most important knowledge that I got acquired in the process.
We are in 1790 when the Novelli family moves to a tiny, tiny area in Piedmont.
Here they start viticulture and wine-making, but it will be only in 1930s when the Moscato Passito, so dried Moscato, Muscat Blanc or Moscato Bianco, like we say in Italy, thanks to the work of Tommaso Novelli, who start making a Moscato Passito, so dried Muscat Blanc, and his wine started to gain recognition among the wine lovers.
But it will be in the 1980s when the wine will finally get the highest success thanks to the Scajone family, which meanwhile has been associated to the Novelli because the only daughter of Tommaso Novelli married Mr. Scajone, who took care of the winery and of the estate.
Like I said, it will be in the 1980s when Giancarlo Scajone started to apply quality wine procedures for the making of these beautiful and incredible wines, and the very first results were astonishing that attracted the interest of many, many notable wine connoisseurs of that time, and one of them was, like I said, Luigi Veronelli, who suggested and supported the idea of making a Denominazione di Origine Controllata for this specific wine.
Many of you know that he was one of the main supporter and founder of the concept of the Denominazione Comunale, so communal denomination.
And in fact, in May 1992, finally the Loazzolo Denominazione di Origine Controllata came to reality, and it was just three hectares of area, a very, very tiny, tiny territory with steep, steep vineyards and with a very, very low yield.
Today, the main representative of this Denominazione is Forteto della Luia, and the leading wine, which is certainly the flagship wine for this winery, is Loazzolo Piazza Risqué, which is also The Wine Taste Five Diamonds, like I said, the best wine for May 2026.
Let's talk about the wine, and so it is important to note that it is made 100% Moscato Bianco or Muscat Blanc, dried Moscato Bianco, because it is according to the Italian classification of wines, a Passito, and so a sweet wine made from dried grapes.
