We're continuing our three-part series built around a simple principle that Dr. Robert Westerman taught for years.

When you're having a problem in your practice, you need to determine whether you're dealing with a systems problem, a staff problem, or a training problem, and sometimes, Sandy, it's more than one.

We talked about consistency, tribal knowledge, and what happens when the way your practice operates lives inside someone's head instead of inside the practice, and today we're moving to the team, the staff, but I wanna take this conversation beyond how do we find good employees.

Because being understaffed costs money, hiring the wrong person costs money, losing the right person costs money, and keeping the wrong person too long can cost, can cost a tremendous amount of money, as we know.

Do you think dentists sometimes get so focused on controlling payroll that they don't recognize what understaffing is costing them?

Just today, [laughs] just today I had a conversation, and I saw a couple of posts and on social media about this exact thing.

They were talking about one person had somebody that, that is mad at them because their bonus got cut, and they don't wanna fire them, and everybody else is jumping on.

It's like, "Dude, you've gotta get rid of this person." And then he starts talking about how controlling they are and how they don't get along with anybody, and they used to be a hygienist and now they're the office manager and nobody likes them and he'll never fire her.
