[upbeat music] Care to nerd out today? We're gonna talk Super Comp, and to be completely frank, this is probably the last episode that we'll dedicate to Super Comp of the season, and it is early October.
Since the NHRA adopted its current points system, which was in the early 1990s, so we're talking over 30 years ago, the, the, the magic number, so to speak, has been 700 points.
Um, case in point, in that time, since I think it was 1994, only 25 drivers across all of the NHRA Lucas Oil Series categories have ever posted 700 points.
And until Jimmy Hidalgo Jr. did it a couple of years ago, no one had ever posted 700 points and failed to win the world championship, right? 700 is the magic number.
Cooter in 2024, he posted up 711 in stock eliminator to finish second by a couple of points, but that is the extreme outlier.
That, that 700-point mark had only been crested one time in Super Comp by Gary Stinnett in 2005.
That speaks a little bit to the, the parity and the level of competition in Super Comp.
I think most sportsman drivers would agree that it is one of, if not the most, um, like...
Difficult is not the s- the, the best term to use here, but like the class with the most parity, the class where it's hardest to really separate and run away and dominate.
With his win in Bakersfield last weekend, Trey Vetter ran his total for the season to 711 points, and he's only been to nine races.
Trey Vetter, [laughs] not only did he win the first leg of the double in Bakersfield last week, he then improved his score more by advancing to the quarterfinals in the second leg.
Just to put this into perspective, he's got five races left at which, at least on paper, he could improve his score.
Like, the more interesting question is, can Trey Vetter put up the highest score in NHRA Lucas Oil Series history, right? That belongs to Peter Biondo.
