A Negative Cologuard Doesn’t Mean Your Colon Is Clear

Your Cologuard came back negative. Does that mean your colon is completely clear? Not exactly. In this episode, Dr. Albert Takem explains what a negative Cologuard result actually tells you, why Cologuard and colonoscopy are not equivalent tests, and how each fits into colorectal cancer screening. Cologuard can be a legitimate screening option for appropriately selected average-risk adults, especially for people who might otherwise avoid screening altogether. But it does not directly examine the inside of the colon. A colonoscopy does, and it can also allow physicians to biopsy suspicious areas or remove certain precancerous polyps before they progress.
