She wondered, "How do fireflies glow?" [upbeat music] Fireflies are incredible little bugs that light up the night with their glowing bottoms.
Can you say bioluminescence? That's a fancy word for when a living thing makes its own light.
Some other animals can do it, too, like certain types of jellyfish, and there's even a kind of mushroom that can do it.
[gentle music] Inside the firefly's body, specifically in its lower belly, there are special chemicals called luciferin and luciferase.
Can you say luciferin and luciferase? [gentle music] When these two chemicals mix together with oxygen, they create a reaction that gives off light.
Think of it kind of like one of those glow sticks that you snap and it starts to shine.
Now, when you come across something bright, like a light bulb or a fire, is it smart to touch it? Why not? Right, because most light sources give off heat.
But unlike a light bulb or a flame, the light that fireflies make doesn't give off heat.
So why do fireflies even glow in the first place? Well, they actually do it for a few reasons.
Each species of firefly has its own special flashing pattern, kind of like a blinking love note.
[upbeat music] "Dear Martha, I think you are really pretty, prettier than any of the other fireflies.
There are places in the world where thousands of them flash in sync like a giant blinking light show in the forest.
