What are you carrying around with you when you speak English at work? In this Confidence Session, I explore Ian Robertson's idea of **“mental backpacks”.** These are the labels, past experiences and…
The topic that I wanted to choose for these episodes was diving into confidence.
You spend a lot of time and a lot of money, let's be honest, trying to build your confidence with English.
Also, if it's not already obvious, this is a Confident Business English podcast.
The idea is that each episode just nudges you along the way to feeling more confident.
If that's just a mindset thing that maybe you think, okay, that's a different way of looking at things and that makes me feel more confident, whether it's looking at a piece of vocabulary that's really important to you and breaking it down.
I feel more confident to use it, which then helps you speak up more, which then helps you have more visibility and more contribution, which then helps you feel more likely to go for a promotion or go for a transfer or get a new job.
So really, it's kind of like a domino effect in a positive way, building more confidence.
Where can more confidence take you? As I was saying in the previous episode, the goal is not more confidence.
What would more confidence in English mean to you in your career, but also your life? it's not just about more money in the pocket, although that's of course very nice, more salaries, more bonuses, etc.
When I see people that want to work with me and Sometimes it makes me genuinely feel quite sad because I see people who are very technically capable, but it just weighs so heavily on their mind and takes up so much mental energy.
Anyway, last time I did a little refresh on some of the terms, we started talking also about the fact that words can also help you feel more confident because it allows you to focus more.
So we talked about the example of saying rather than I'm scared about giving a presentation tomorrow, it could be I'm really looking forward to giving a presentation tomorrow.
