[gentle music] In this episode, we'll be discussing neuroimmune influences on burnout.

The nervous system operates by sending signals to the body by passing signal chemicals through its many, many nerve endings into narrow spaces called synapses.

Each nerve ending has many, many synapses, more in the brains of autistic people than neurotypical people.

The first nerve cell in a chain releases hormones called neurotransmitters into the extremely narrow gap each of its synapses.

Once enough neurotransmitter accumulates in the synaptic space, the next nerve cell in line fires a signal into its synapses.

Some of the signals from the autonomic nervous system end up in neuroimmune synapses, which is where the nerve meets the immune system.

This indicates how important communication between the nervous system and the immune system is to the proper function of cells.
