In this episode we're joined by Filipe D’Avillez (Aa-VEE-Lez), General Manager of TRIBE London Canary Wharf. Filipe has built a varied career in hospitality, from launching hotels and developing teams…
Um, to begin with, could you tell us a little bit about your career in hospitality and some of the roles and experiences that you've, that have shaped you throughout this journey?
Um, um, it's a funny one because I, I actually didn't think that, um, hospitality was going to be my career wh- when I was young.
Um, um, I grew up in Lisbon and, um, at the time, um, hospitality was, uh, was growing a lot.
Um, um, and, um, my first job, I was 16, was a summer job, and really I just wanted to have the coolest sneakers.
Uh, in school I wanted to have the flip phone and, and, and just kind of be the coolest kid.
I have so many great memories still, uh, not just colleagues and, and with guests.
The second summer break I went back when I was seventeen and I went back when I was eighteen.
And, um, when I had an opportunity to work full-time, uh, and I went to college, I, I decided to study, um, hospitality naturally, and, uh, I was working at night and, and I was going to, to college in the morning.
So that was, it was really tiring at the time, but, uh, I, I was really enjoying going to work.
I, I worked with really, um, um, talented people in Lisbon and I, I've learned everything from I was doing, I can do a croissant now or a pastel de nata if you like because I was doing the prep for, for the morning for breakfast, uh, uh, doing meeting and events, groups.
And, and then, yeah, uh, after doing that for a few years, I, I felt that I really wanted to grow up in that career and I eventually I decided to move to London.
I moved with a couple of friends that also work in hospitality and, um, I, I started from scratch again.
But, but really to be honest, my first role I say started from scratch because I was a luggage porter when I came in and I already had six, seven years of experience.
I worked for Park Plaza, um, and I was employee of the year because, you know, I brought all the passion that I had from, from, uh, welcoming guests in, in Portugal and, and I moved up quickly.
