And we've talked on the show before about tabletop role-playing tie-in fiction in relation to Changeling the Dreaming, and I've had occasion to discuss it a lot lately on Mage the Podcast, but I'm curious what your opinion is.
Like, have you read much tie-in game fiction before, and did you find it useful at all?
Yes, and sometimes.
Exalted is a wonderful but complex fantasy setting.
Now, I was having a hard time grokking a lot of the game's content, so I was very excited to read an anthology of fiction.
I figured this would help me understand what's in the mindset of our protagonists, our antagonists.
How do people navigate around the world? What do people think about the metaphysics? And I got a strong impression.
But I went back to RPG dot nets forums afterwards.
And I said, Wow, I learned this about how the sores work and how their magic works.
And I didn't understand this.
And then everyone said, Wow, that's great.
But also 100% wrong.
Everything you learned from that book is actually not how this works.
You cannot be a solar and the dragon blooded at the same time.
In fact, I discovered So despite how much I enjoyed some of the stories in that anthology, there were a lot of questionable choices.
And that's not the last time that I have seen something like that in fiction.
Conversely, I do feel like fiction has often given me a better understanding of, at its best, what the writers think the game should feel like.
There's times when I've read about interactions for another game line where I go, oh, you know, I never thought about it that way.
But yes, I suppose the character could see it like that.
Or, oh, this is how this antagonist works for this.
And it has turned out to be.
correct i think the important thing behind the fiction is that it is and can be a useful resource however i gotta be honest i don't think it should be your primary resource i think you should look at the inspirational media list the recommended reading for any game that you check out And you should go to those sources.
They will give you a much better understanding of what inspired the authors.
Sometimes what they borrowed almost literally one for one from another source.
