Daily Mass: We are blessed when we hear and observe the Word of God

Now this passage, who is blessed? Jesus has been teaching.

He's given them the Our Father.

He's driven out demons.

And now someone calls out from the crowd, a woman, and she goes, wow, the woman who brought you into this world is blessed indeed.

Now that's high praise.

But Jesus takes that and expands it.

You want to be truly blessed? You want to be truly blessed? Receive the Word of God.

Hear the Word of God and observe the Word of God.

You can take that on a couple of different levels.

First off, Mary is one of those people.

She heard the Word of God.

She observed the Word of God.

No doubt, Mary is blessed.

Not just because she carried baby Jesus and nursed baby Jesus.

No doubt about that.

But true blessing is to hear the word of God.

Now, I love this because one of the titles for Jesus is he is the word.

He is the word, God's word articulated in our world.

That to hear the words of Jesus, who is God.

Christ, who speaks in our midst, teaches us He is the word.

Now we also talk about this for the scriptures.

But the teaching that we have from Christ, that we have in the scriptures, the fulfillment of salvation history from the Old Testament, the word of God, to hear the word of God, that means to have an open heart, to be receptive, to allow it to soak in.
