When the aortic valve becomes really tight, your prognosis over the next two, three, five years is not very good.
When somebody is 90 years old, you know, having them have their chest cut open, have their heart stopped, even if they made it through the surgery, the post-operative course and their healing is not an easy course.
So instead of opening the chest and stopping the heart, we kind of came up with the technique.
To deliver a new valve, the transcatheter aortic valve implantation cut the one-year mortality by about 50%.
I think the most important question is asking, what are all of my options for this patient?
For decades, a failing heart valve meant one path, open heart surgery, cracking the chest, a heart-lung machine, a long recovery, and for older or higher risk patients, sometimes the answer was simply, you're not a candidate.
But that's no longer the full story.
Catheter-based valve therapies have changed who can be treated, how fast they recover, and how much risk they actually have to accept.
The problem is, a lot of patients are never told these options actually exist.
