I'm the Executive Director of Democracy at McKinnon, uh, and really pleased to be partnering with the Burning Platforms Podcast, uh, in support of tonight's event.
Um, [lips smack] Democracy Counts is a campaign to renew the rules around politics and media in Australia.
Uh, our research shows what is probably not surprising to many of you in the room, that Australians are frustrated by the political system.
Uh, but clearly the rules around media and politics haven't kept up with people's expectations.
Uh, our campaign is about building the, uh, political pressure and space for governments and parliamentarians to act, uh, and, uh, harnessing the kind of untapped, uh, energy, uh, and ambition, uh, amongst Australians to see, uh, the rules change.
Um, Australians are looking at the international examples where democracies are under threat and backsliding, uh, and they're clear they don't wanna see that happen here at home.
Uh, our research shows high levels of dissatisfaction and distrust, uh, and we know that, uh, with emerging technologies, uh, the, the, uh, threats that we're facing are only gonna accelerate.
Uh, we recently published an open letter to all parliamentarians, uh, published in The AFR and The Australian, uh, and we called for mandated civics education, digital media literacy, investment in public interest journalism, social media regulation, uh, electoral funding reform, lobbying reform, and to protect the independence of the, the public service.
Uh, the campaign's building an alliance of organizations who do work in democracy day in, day out, uh, proud to be supporting 47, uh, organizations who do that work, uh, and that continues to grow on a, on a daily basis.
Um, we're supporting these organizations, uh, and joining up their work because we know there's power in many voices, one message.
Uh, and we're calling on the public to count themselves in to support our campaign, um, and tonight's an opportunity to hear from some of our campaign partners, uh, and supporters and test ourselves on what's true and what's not.
Um, Peter, Lizzie, and the panelists are gonna touch more on the campaign throughout the event, um, but if you're interested in the campaign, don't forget to count yourselves in.
