Decode the Desk | “Touch Base” — Wait… What Does That Mean?

So what does it mean? I mean, what is the origin of this word? Yeah, let's

talk about the origin.

First of all, since baseball is very popular in Japan, I'm hoping that this

is

relatable to our listeners.

So in baseball, a runner, Jenny, has to touch a base to stay safe.

So there are many bases in that game.

And then eventually in the business situation, the business world borrowed that phrase to mean making brief contact with someone.

I see.

So, does it mean like a quick conversation or like check-in with someone? Exactly.

Something like that.

Exactly.

Interesting.

Okay.

Oh, so, dear students, like, you know, if you're tired of saying like, let's meet quickly, so we say, how should we say it? Let's touch base?

Yes.

Oh, interesting.

Because it functions as a verb.

I see.

Okay.

Okay.

All right.

Can it be like an adjective as well?

In some situations.

For example, partner it with a noun.
