JTP: Scherzer Shines to Avoid Sweep + NL Wild Card Check-In

[upbeat music] While the Blue Jays finally did their part, they got a little help from a couple errors from the Detroit Tigers.

5 to 1 win.

They salvage a game in a series where they probably needed to have two, and definitely should've had two, even the way Monday's game went.

They win this one on a walk-off challenge after Louis Varland comes in.

Uh, af- they try to get the Spencer Miles three out save.

I think there's a little bit of getting Miles' pitch count up.

He threw 44 the last time out, he threw 29 here.

Uh, maybe gonna be used in bulk with three of the final nine games here being bullpen or pseudo-bullpen days.

Um, so extending him out, let him get that, but the first sign of trouble, Louis Varland comes in, cleans that one up.

I mentioned Detroit did a little bit of a favor there with, uh, an inning where they made three consecutive errors.

Myles Straw came up in the clutch.

Elsewhere, Cleveland beat the White Sox.

So, as we've been looking at the standings and who the Jays are catching and things like that, the notable change here is twofold.

One is that the Blue Jays are now chasing the White Sox, not the Guardians, and two is that the Blue Jays do not hold the tiebreaker against the White Sox like they do the Guardians.

So, uh, heading into that series we had said a sweep in either direction was the best case scenario for the Blue Jays.

Uh, the Guardians winning two of three was the worst case scenario.

You'd feel better about this had the Blue Jays not dropped two of three to the Tigers.

But here they are, one and a half back without the tiebreaker.

They are also a half game back of the Rangers, who they'll play this weekend.
