In a world where the police profession faces increasing demands, how can technology lighten the load? In this episode, Eric speaks with Joseph Ayalew from Code Four, who unveils the transformative potential of AI in report writing for police departments.
Joseph opens up about the often-overlooked truth of law enforcement: report writing is a significant part of an officer's job. The challenge lies in balancing time spent on reports while still being effective in the field. Joseph's journey into this space is deeply personal. At just four years old, he survived a life-threatening car accident thanks to off-duty police officers.
This experience ignited a passion for law enforcement that led him to become actively involved in his community—especially during the turbulent times of the George Floyd protests. Together with co-founder George Cheng, Joseph founded Code Four, focusing on enhancing police efficiency through AI. Their mission began with AI report writing, evolving into a suite of tools that includes AI investigations and redactions.
One major challenge Joseph identifies is the limitations of current AI technologies in report writing. Joseph and his team have tackled this by integrating computer vision capabilities, allowing their software to analyze video footage and gather accurate information without relying solely on audio. Joseph's story is a testament to the impact that one individual can have in their community. The drive to improve law enforcement through technology reflects a hopeful future where officers spend less time on paperwork and more time serving their communities.
Code Four builds AI tools for public safety. REPORT turns body-worn and in-car footage into a draft narrative that the officer reviews, corrects and signs in their own voice, so nothing goes out without
their name on it.
INSIGHTS gives detectives one place to search case files, phone extractions, jail calls, interviews and footage in plain
language, with every answer cited back to its source. Code Four is in about 200 departments today, and almost all of them came from one chief telling another.
