Gold and silver brought thousands of people into the region, and communities such as Gold Hill and neighbouring Virginia City grew rapidly around the mines.
Businesses, saloons, hotels and homes appeared as people arrived looking for opportunity.
And beneath everything, miners were descending deeper and deeper into the mountain.
The building we now know as the Gold Hill Hotel appears to date from around 1861.
Originally known as the Reason House, and later the Vesey House, it became part of everyday life in this rapidly growing community.
