Here's a number that I think will mess with how you think about your own scorecard, maybe permanently, in a good way.
A scratch golfer, someone playing to about a 2 handicap, averaged something like 1.1 double bogeys per round.
A 26 handicap golfer, which is completely normal, respectable, average golfer, averaged about 6.1 double bogeys per round.
Now here's the part that actually surprised me because I would have guessed the difference was most birdies, the scratch golfer just making a ton more of them.
The entire story of the gap between a great golfer and an average golfer isn't written by how many birdies they make.
