In this bonus episode of the Best on Tour Breakdown podcast, Jason Christie joins us to reveal the strategy and setup he used to win the recent Bassmaster Elite Series event on the Pasquotank River /…
A month ago, if I would have told you you're going to win a Bassmaster Elite throwing an urchin, what would you have said?
I made it to my sponsor that builds the baits whenever they were thinking about building.
So if you would have told me that a month ago, I'd just, I'd have been like, you're crazy.
So you had no experience throwing one before this event? 20 minutes, 20 minutes.
I had to go work a thing at Shields and I bought one and then I came home and went fishing one day and I was fishing the shad spawn thing with other baits and about 10 o'clock I was like, I'm going to tie that thing on and see how to rig it and this kind of stuff.
And I did that and I rigged it with a single hook and I fished it for 20 minutes and caught, I mean, like three fish on it.
I was about ready to come home anyway and I put it back in the rod locker and I learned something that I didn't like the way I had it rigged.
I had to make another trip to Tulsa and I ended up getting, you know, two or three more.
Just to have, you know, it was not like I thought that it was going to be a staple at that event for me.
So I bought a few and then driving to North Carolina, once I got out there, you know, I sat down and rigged a couple rods up and kind of varied the way I would rig it on the two rods.
And yeah, the first day of the event or the first day of practice, I get out there and I made my first cast with it.
that morning and 15 minutes later i catch an eight pounder five minutes later i catch a five pounder then i catch another five pounder and i just got locked into it that's that's something about this bait once you once you get locked into it it's hard to throw something else And that's, you know, that's been the same thing with me in my career.
If you give me one bait and I get a lot of confidence in it and I can throw that one bait all day, a spinner bait, a frog, a spook, I've won some events doing that.
So, you know, I'm not one to have 20 rods laid on the deck and bounce back and forth.
