So we start with the first chapter, which is called Nightfall, and we're with Elena.
So Elena is in a war camp, and she's thinking about how she's going to die here, and no one will know that a princess of Terrasen died in that spot.
Obviously, Elena refuses to leave, and when she sees Erawan himself has joined the battle, she decides that she will cross the battlefield and kill him to hopefully get his men to stand down.
So Gavin and Elena come up with a plan for Gavin to distract Erawan while Elena contains him.
They agree no one can know they did this and hope that whoever has to battle Erawan in the future can forgive them for what they're about to do.
So up until this point, we've been led to believe that Elena killed Erawan, but obviously, he was just contained by Elena as like a, "Oh, we'll put him away and someone else will have to deal with him." We then start with Part One: The Firebringer, and we are in Chapter One with Elide.
He's hiding in the forest after killing three witches and interrogating and killing a fourth because he wanted to know what Duke Perrington was planning, so that's what the witches were looking for.
Once the witches leave, he sees Elide in the forest, and she smells like the valg, which makes him think she's possessed somehow, and he begins to hunt her.
So they're waiting for the lords of Terrasen because Aedion wrote a letter to them to meet up in the forest at this exact spot to discuss the war.
Aelin is playing with her water magic in a stream when she sees one of the little folk watching her, and then Rowan comes up behind her.
