I was never really sure of what I wanted to be when I grew up, and at least that part of me hasn't changed.

However, for a brief time in the summer of 1966, my path seemed perfectly clear.

When I lifted the tarp covering what was left of a 1947 Triumph Speed Twin, I knew immediately what had been missing in my life.

The fact that the owner would let me pay out the two hundred dollars he wanted clinched the deal.

My friend Jerry and I loaded the collection of parts into his truck and headed for Billy's house in Seguin.

Billy's fridge was always stocked with cold beer, and the extra room in the back of his carport was the perfect place to work on the bike.

As we drove, visions of a custom hardtail played in and out of our conversation.

How a couple of penniless college kids would pull this off, well, that was never questioned.
