Welcome to Tuesday 29 September 2026. Did you spot the new podcast logo?! I thought it was time to update it and I hope you like it. I've got some news to share with you about the hens, the bed…
Now on the field, the bed prepping is well underway.
I've been clearing out things that are a complete disaster, really.
There weren't that many because not many of my cosmos did anything sensible this year at all.
I am never, ever growing cosmos again.
The agrostemma bed had already been cleared out and I'd harvested all the seeds from that.
But there were some little stragglers in there.
So that bed three has been completely weeded and hoed and then raked.
And then bed four, the remainders of the...
Cornflowers have come out.
A couple of straggler cosmos is in there.
Interestingly, if you listen to last year's episodes, you will know that I was growing apricot cosmos last year as an experiment.
That was also a disaster.
So they came up really short.
I don't know if it was to do with the heat wave or the seed or whatever.
Just the fact that cosmos hate me, but I have found two cosmos plants, two apricot cosmos this year that are clearly self-seeded from last year.
And they are much bigger, better looking plants, but they still don't look very healthy.
So I think the field is just definitely, definitely not for them.
Now, some of the beds are going to be getting a deep litter from the hen house.
This is the shavings I put down in hen houses and, And the chickens stay on it for months.
And it's just like a really, really deep, thick layer.
And it's so all the sort of poo gets mixed in with the shavings.
It reduces the smell, keeps things, I wouldn't say fresh in there, but it does not smell in there.
And I clear it all out and then it rots down and then I put it onto the beds.
And then some of the beds are getting extra compost, but not all of them because AgriStemma prefers a poorer quality soil.
So not a rich soil so that you don't get loads of soft green vegetative growth and not enough flowering.
