Attackers Assembled: Inside Owen Sound’s OHL Draft Weekend

This is Max Fronson.

Where did you grow up, and what first made you fall in love with hockey?

I grew up in the Beaches, which is near downtown Toronto.

I think the first thing made me fell, fall in love with hockey was probably my dad continued to play even when he got, when he retired from, from the OHL.

And so I think he kinda made me fall in love with the game.

And watching it on TV, kinda there's, there's an atmosphere of hockey all around the place, so yeah.

N- now, your dad, you p- he played in the OHL.

Is there an Owen Sound connection there?

Uh, yeah, he played in Owen Sound as well as in Kingston, so he, uh, tells me lots of stories about what it was like playing in Owen Sound.

He was probably one of the, the many people that you were with that stood up and gave you a big hug when your name was called out there.

What was that moment like between you and your dad, knowing that you're, you're kinda doing something similar that he did when he was your age?

Yeah, it w- it was special.

Obviously, your family's there with you all along the way, so getting to have this moment with them was something that I've dreamt of for a while.

Aside from today, 'cause I'm sure this is a pretty special one in your hockey memories, but any other big memories in your career up to this point that, uh, you think about, or maybe people that helped mentor you and get you to this place that you're in today?

I think, I don't know if there's one moment that really sticks out.

I think kinda every day, getting to be with the guys that I love on my team, my coaches, is something special every day.

So those are kind of the moments that I try to cherish and have a lot of fun with.

It's a pretty cool thing to be drafted in the OHL.

Pretty cool to do it the way that they're doing it this year.

Your first year [laughs] getting drafted, and you get kind of the, the pro experience here.

What's this like for a player, to, to do it this way? Is, is this preferred, or does this make you a little extra nervous than, you know, just showing up at a draft party in the city that drafted you? [laughs]

I think there were some extra nerves, but I, I work out with some guys that have been drafted before this, and so they were all wishing me good luck, and they were talking about how special it'd be to do it in person, so that kinda made me realize how much cooler it is.

What, what team did you watch growing up, and who were kinda some of your favorite players that you've kinda watched that you maybe model your game after a little bit?

I, so I'm from Toronto, so I love watching Toronto.

But as a defenseman, they really haven't had that many great defensemen.
