A Chat with Daniel Newman
Oh, I didn't even talk about when you, when I was giving my intro, uh, the Indie Games Night Market is another thing that I'm doing with New Mill, which I'm sure we'll talk about in a little more depth later, but I wanted to throw that in there, too.
Um, so one thing I wanted to talk to you about, though, when you mentioned about coming up with Gachapon Trick in the airport, right?
So you, you've designed, uh, quite a few games now, um, a l- a lot of them in the trick-taking, card-shedding-
Is it, is it idea first, mechanism first, theme first? Uh, or are you the type who sits and, and tries to come up with an idea, or does it just hit and then you develop it?
So it's often a combination of, um, I have an idea, often, like, in the shower or as I'm falling asleep or something, when your brain starts to relax.
... and it's like, "What haven't I seen?" So yeah, sometimes it's like I have a thought, a- and it's often things that are, like, kind of working in the background that eventually kind of percolate out or percolate up or whatever.
Um, sometimes I design joke first, so I have a dumb idea that is funny to me, and then I go, "Oh, actually, I know how I can make that a game." So, like, Gachapon Trick was one of those.
