Update to Guide to Road Safety Part 3: Safe Speed Management

Hello everyone and welcome to our webinar on the update to the Guide to Road Safety Part 3, Safe Speed Management.

My name is Anthony Lucchini.

I'm a communications officer at Austroads and I will be moderating today's webinar alongside Dr Blair Turner who will moderate the Q&A.

I'd like to start by acknowledging the Treaty of Waitangi and Māori is the original people of New Zealand.

I also acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the custodians of the lands from which we are broadcasting today.

Austroads has offices in Sydney and Melbourne.

Today I am in Sydney and so I'm on the lands of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation.

I pay my respects to Elders past and present and to their deep and ongoing connection to the land.

Austroads is a collective of Australasian transport and traffic agencies.

Our focus is to deliver an improved road and transport network for our members.

This project is delivered under the Road Safety and Design Program, which is managed by Michael Newstig.

The program aims to improve the safety of the road network.

Today's presenters will speak for around 45 minutes, then we'll have a Q&A session for 15 minutes at the end.

I'm very excited to introduce our presenters for today.

Anna Sharpen is a principal transportation advisor at ABLI and the technical lead for the update of the AustRoad Safe Speed Guide.

Anna has over 15 years of experience working in transport and road safety.

Anna led the development of New Zealand's National Speed Management Guide.

She has also worked internationally supporting road safety and speed management in low and middle income countries.

She was the lead author of the Low Speed Zone Guide.

And Anna has extensive experience delivering training and capacity building workshops for road safety stakeholders in New Zealand and internationally.

Dr. Blair Turner is the Osteoids Project Manager for the current update of the Osteoids Guide on Safe Speed.

Much of his career has been spent conducting research and developing policy on speed management.

He completed his PhD on this topic also.

He is a lead author of the Global Guide on Speed Management published by the World Bank and WRI and author of the WHO manual on this topic.

He has conducted research and published widely on various speed issues, including the effectiveness of speed interventions, innovative use of speed data, the broader social benefits of speed management and methods for engagement with the community and decision makers on this topic.

He has helped develop policy on speed in most Australian states for local government and for various overseas governments.
