Welcome to Season One of Arkham Northside, a retrospective look at Arkham Horror, the Card Game. This week we'll delve a little too deep into the classic do-what-you-can scenario, The Midnight Masks.
Some scenarios in Arkham are not meant to be fully completed.
Instead, investigators are asked to do as much as they can before time runs out.
In fact, virtually every major campaign has at least one scenario where the success criteria is virtually unattainable.
In the Night of the Zealot, that scenario is, of course, The Midnight Masks.
The Midnight Masks is the second scenario in the core set campaign, Night of the Zealot.
In it, you help a red-haired woman named Leda Chantler find a number of cultists hiding in Arkham as a way to disrupt a ritual happening later in the evening.
There are six unique cultists in Arkham.
The more you interrogate, the better.
This is most players' first introduction to the various places around Arkham.
It orients them well with the map and with this kind of scenario, the do-what-you-can scenario.
In The Midnight Masks, all locations start in play, except perhaps for your house.
If you burned it down, there will be a gap in your three-by-three grid in the bottom right.
If you didn't burn it down, there is an excellent clue plus resource action on it and some very easily discoverable clues.
It's an okay location to have in play, but Leda is better.
The other variation in the setup is with Southside and Downtown.
Both have two versions.
And of the two, Maw's Boarding House is significantly better.
It lets you search your deck for an ally, which that might be the best printed ability on any location in the scenario.
The Historical Society lets you draw a chunk of cards, which isn't too shabby, but it can also draw you into your weakness.
Both are relatively easy to search.
Both have one clue per investigator.
The other variation is much more significant.
Downtown could either be a four-shroud, two-clue location with a victory point if it's Arkham Asylum, or a three-shroud, one-clue location if it's the First Bank of Arkham.
Leaving the existence of victory points to chance is not cool.
