Humans + AI: how project managers can build hybrid intelligence

Well, in some ways, it feels like we've been talking about this forever because it's been, you know, three years or so of a lot of hype.

And we are in some kind of a hype cycle with all of this.

But in actual fact, it's still very, very early in certainly the generative AI revolution.

If you look at other revolutions, it takes a long time.

So what I would say is we're in this kind of awkward middle.

So we've gone past the hype.

We're in this awkward middle phase where some people are still at the very beginning.

Some people are steaming ahead, doing incredible things.

And then you've got these people in the middle who are not quite sure they're tinkering.

And that's why I'm so glad Stephanie's on the call because that skilling piece is such an important part of getting people changing the culture So I think we're at that point where everyone's tried things like ChatGPT or Copilot, but for me, trying isn't using.

There's a big gap between people who've had a play, had a tinker, had an experiment, might use it to help them with the odd email.

and people who have really gone all in and doing really incredible things.

So we're facing this thing that I call the capability gap, which is whereas AI adoption, and I'm using explanation marks here, in companies is going up.

Everyone says they've got AI, whether that's Copilot or something else.

But the capability to use those tools is not rising at nearly the same level.

Therefore, this gap is starting to emerge.

So that's where I would kind of say we are at the moment.

Do you feel like you've got a bit of an overview across projects and programs? Are most people you're meeting across different sectors, for example, across different organizations, somewhere in the middle? Is that where most people are or like early on in the, I guess, journey?

It's really, I don't know what you find, Stephanie, but it's really unpredictable.

I can go and do a talk.

I do plenty of talks like Stephanie and you can go and do a talk and there'll be a room full of real enthusiasts.

And they're not necessarily from the same company.

You've just got, happen to have a bunch of people who are steaming ahead and doing really interesting things, gentrically, et cetera, et cetera.

And then you can do another one where you've still got, I did one the other week.

where there was 15% of the respondents hadn't used AI at all.
